Blog refresh comes with a new chapter in life! No longer a student (in the literal sense) it’s out in the big bad world! That big bad world of doom, gloom and all things depressing… Or so we’re led to believe.

Aye so the economy is up the Swanny! But has our standard of living really changed THAT much? Do we now have to drink from disease-ravaged water, eat mouldy bread and hunt cantaloupe with bows and arrows? I think not! Space Raiders have shot up to an astronomical twenty pence a pack and you’ll struggle to get a pint for less than three quid. As we ‘struggle’ to cope with our rapidly decreasing living standards lets just stop for a minute and think… Is it really that bad?

The way the media rattle on about it doesn’t help at all, why can’t the medium be used to encourage people? Instead they only make the matters worse by constantly reminding everyone that we’re seemingly up shit creek. So what does this achieve? It de-motivates people, it gives them an excuse to sit on their arse and do nothing. The result? The economy gets another punch in the rib cage. The work is out there, it’s up to us to focus, work hard an earn it. No ones going to give it to us on a silver platter, especially now with Lord Sauron apparently rising from the depths of Mount Doom to cover our lands in a media fuelled smog of negativity.

Stunning minimalist posters for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 by a guy called Simon page. Came accross them in the latest issue of IDN magazine along with a host of other minimalist work!

I’m really into minimalism at the moment or anything that’s clean cut and stripped back. People might look at designs like these and quickly palm them off as simple and easy to do, but that’s far from the case. To encapsulate a broad subject like astronomy in such a simple way is quite simply genius!

Picked up this bad boi in the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh. Absolutely brilliant quarterly mag, filled to the brim with visual porn. Fantastic subject matter with this issue and such a nice format, stock and even came with a substantial zine and a couple of square prints all inside a fantastic cardboard sleeve! Well chuffed!

Doing a project on Sound & Vision at the moment, really getting into film title sequences! I think this is my favourite, directed by Robert Greenberg with the eerie, haunting score supplied by Jerry Goldstein. It is the prefect marriage of Sound & Vision, one that I believe set a new standard when it was released in 1979.

I rarely go a day without listening to The Prodigy! The energy of the music, the characters within the band, the illusiveness of the man who actually makes all of the songs. they are a great band that fit into no genre, they define themselves and there isn’t another band on the planet like them.

For a long period of time I would always skip this track, it always seemed slightly out of touch with the rest of 1997’s sublime ‘The fat of the land’. The song is a cover of ‘Lost cause’ by a band called The Cosmic Psychos, so original credit goes to them for the foundations. This is just one of those songs that reflects the way my life is at the moment! Everything seems to be fuelling my desire to have a successful career in design. But the key motivation is often brought to light when I meet or interact with people I don’t want to end up like. Drones, stuck in lala land with three different weekly TV magazines and a constant glazed zombie stare. That’s what drives me, that’s my fuel, it provides me with a more valuable source of motivation than anything else I come across!
